This week as I’ve watched news events unfold and witnessed people’s reactions, I’ve felt close to overwhelm at times. Unkindness, selfishness and toxicity seem to have the upper hand. Then, like little bits of birdsong at my summer campsite, messages of hope came through my email and social media feed.
Here is what nourished me this week, and I share these links in lieu of my usual blog. May your heart be nourished, as well.

An Icon of Defiance
Diana Butler Bass
I love Butler Bass’ imagery of the open hand as a gesture of defiance—the open hand welcoming the stranger, offering hope to those who are struggling, tending those are suffering. In these times, let’s also remember to extend the open hand to ourselves, offering to ourselves welcome, hope and gentle care.
Too Small to Fail

For those who don’t mind some “raw” language, this next link is also offered. The message is about hope when everything is falling apart.
Watching Out for Nonsense
by Nadia Bolz Weber
My act of self-care for this next week is to pay attention to the small things that bring me joy—the tiny flower, the shades of green on the riverbank beside where I’m fishing, the laughter of my loved ones as we make time to just hang out together. What tiny things lighten your heart, even just a little bit?
